Jason remapped my 4.8is...

Post by Raj » Tue Nov 30, 2010 8:53 pm

I've known Jason for a couple of years now after he remapped my 530d MSport before I went out to the Ring. I was very impressed with the job he did and the 530d was superb on the journey there and back and especially round the Ring itself.

So, I let him work his magic on the 4.8is.

It was booked in for Saturday at 1pm and I'm in Wolverhampton (testament to the fact that I am only willing to travel to to the right people to work on my cars). I set off at about 11am and headed down the M40. This gave me a good opportunity to stretch the legs on the 4.8 at different speeds with acceleration so I could give a good match to before and after the remap.

Got to Jason's at 1.30pm where I was duely met by Avtar (very nice meeting you paji...and your E70...seriously nice with the colourcoded aerokit). I handed the keys over to Jason and let him and the boys crack on.
They first check the car over to ensure it was sound and no faults before starting the actual work. Everything was good to go and the ECU was removed as on these they have to be mapped directly to the ECU and not through the port.

Jason asked me what my requirements were for the map. He did say that he could make it very aggressive if I wanted but it would be at the expense of fuel economy. Now I use the X everyday and its not really the kind of motor you need to prove anything in so I told Jason to not make it too aggressive but quick enough.

After sometime of adjusting settings, etc on the map, the ECU was put back in and the X was put back together.

After putting everything back together the fault memory was checked again to ensure no problems and he coded my X with driveaway locking for free...cheers Jason.

So, I hear you ask....THE verdict.......

Instantly felt the extra horses as I pulled away. The throttle has been adjusted at the sametime as adding the extra horsepower and when you push the pedal.....WOW what a difference. Considering it can be more aggressive if I wanted, I am mightly impressed. The power delivery is smooth and swift and the X pulls so cleanly and effortlessly and hurtles to triple figures unbelievably quickly. On the journey back up the M40 no matter what constant speed I started at, as soon as I pressed the pedal there was and instant pull in acceleration.

I've remapped nearly all of my previous motors and can honestly say that the increase is the most noticeable in the X5 over the other NA engined cars I have done before. If you're unsure on whether to or not.......Don't be. Just do it and you won't look back. So give Jason a call and get it booked in... 8-)

Jason remapped my 4.8is...

Post by dwgwyther » Tue Nov 30, 2010 9:18 pm

Hi good write up, I've been thinking about getting it done for a while now, it will be interesting to see what mpg you get out of it now. I'm just down the road from you in Dunston near Stafford. We should setup a meet a bit closer to home see if anyone else is interested in venturing north of Watford ? I will be back home tomorrow as I will be back from work in Libya, slightly warmer out here it was 30c and clear blue skies. Bracing myself for when the wife picks me up from the airport tomorrow.

I've been thinking about orgainising a meet up this way. Wasn't sure with the weather and time of year whether to wait till the new year. You are local Darren so if you fancy meeting up at the Spread Eagle pub on the A449 one day, let us know.

We did one at RAF Cosford (I think it was called that). They were great and we have some pics in the Meet section. Is that a possible venue...?

Yeah, I've done a couple of meets at RAF Cosford as the air museum is there. Went along to the midlands breakfast club meets: http://www.midlandsbreakfastclub.co.uk/index.htm. Next one is 12th December but weather is getting grimmer by the day...

Do you think the new year would be better?

Raj,
Thanks for that.
I've been waiting to hear first hand about a 4.8iS remap for a while and did tend to think it is only worth it for a turbo-diesel.
You've now made my mind up.
I have no excuses as I'm in central London!

I do like the standard set up and it does have a nice burble, BUT.... Been looking at a custom magnaflow from a guy recommended by a friend of mine.

Won't be till well into the new year though.

I've remapped plenty of NA engined cars and always been pleased with the smoother delivery/free'er revving (as that is really the noticeable difference. But the 4.8 is actually really impressive on the gains too. I was shocked by how quick it is now.

If anyone local wants to have a go then they are more than welcome.

I have always wanted to hear of a remap on a 4.8is too as the expected gains I have seen on websites etc have been quite small. 15-18 BHP is what DMS quoted me and it was about £800+VAT which just wasn't worth it. I know that having a remap also makes the delivery much better but obviously that is never advetised - just ususall BHP and Torque figures. This is why reviews and experiences count so much and really do help to sell a product... I have no doubt in my mind now about having this done by Jason.

I'll definitely go to a meet you organise if I am in the country, hopefully Jason will be able to come to that and do a couple of cars in the day? Also, i'll be able to pick up my Sub Enclosure from x555 if he is there... I'll be driving back a very happy man! Just need Pewters to detail it for me too ha ha!

Have you noticed any improvements in the economy (if you can even use that word when describing a 4.8is consumption)?
