Starting issue...

Post by Sim0x » Sat Mar 15, 2014 7:37 pm

Hi guys only me again...

Just drove to Watford and everything was perfect, but... Parked up and then went to start up again to move and it wouldn't kick over it just kept trying. I put it in reverse, then back into park and the rear PDC sensors stayed on so I manually turned them off and it started first time!?!?!

Anyone else had this?

Starting issue...

When you say kick over do you mean it wouldn't turn over? Or that it was turning over and just wouldn't fire up.  If it's the latter, then the fact you had just driven somewhere and the engine was warm is a big clue.  Hot start issues are a prime symptom of injectors failing.  You are losing fuel rail pressure via these when warm ( absolutely fine when running and your HPFP is in service ) just an issue when trying to start.  Get a leak down test performed at local garage to find the culprits and if new ones are needed use company called pf jones who do an exchange service on injectors with 1 year warranty and will save you a fortune on buying new.  Clearly this is me speculating but it sounds exactly the same as issues I had with my e53 3.0d ( assuming you have an 3.0d that is ).  Finally get codes read as there should be one standing for low fuel rail pressure or the like to confirm easily.

Thanks kjb1, yes it just would not fire up and yes it's a 3.0d. Thanks a lot mate, I'll get the above mentioned checked out.

It will start fine when cold because the seals are colder they will pull up and the line will prime as per normal.  The issue is when warm, everything expands and allows fuel to escape on the return line to the tank etc and pass taking longer to prime the line, which is why engine cranks for longer as the fuel rail pressure is attempting to raise itself.

It definitely sounds like injectors to me, exactly the same with cold start happening fine, google it, I'm sure you will find my old thread, or maybe it's lost due to it being on the older site.

That is a question I genuinely cannot answer.  I don't know prices around your ways, could be 1 2 3 or even 4 injectors playing up lol, I genuinely don't know.  Get it to a garage and get leak down test done once warm, also get a code reader on it if you know someone with one.

Cheers for trying to help mate, I'll book into my local garage, and I have just bought this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200968319323?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

to read the codes.

no problem.  Cant comment on Scanner.  Not used that one.  However its coming from Asia, so ideally you need to get it sorted before that arrives.  Remember though use PF Jones for like for like swap of injectors if they are the culprits, great service, next day delivery, you pop your old injectors in when they arrive ( your garage do ) and then off your old ones go in the same packaging back to them, upon their receipt of them you get £x amount per injector back.

Ah cool, so do I need a model / serial number from the ones that are currently in? And when they get changed, do they need to be coded in INPA?

Just an update....

My mate has just plugged in his SnapOn diagnostic machine and no errors were found lol Just bloody typical lol

He did say that it may be the fuel filter, and upon looking at my service indicator it does say that it is nearly that time.

What do you think?

Is the issue still only on hot starts? how long does it take to crank? and fire.  And is it progressively getting worse? it might be that its not gone quite low enough yet to register a fault but yet is noticeable to you

It started flashing up on the cluster "FUEL INJECT SYSTEM" but no fault codes at all.

It only happened the once when I started the thread and kicks over straight away now, I connected to INPA and got this, not sure if it makes a difference:
