Well, had the work done. Turned out it was a cracked manifold.

After that lovely big bill and them taking 4 days to do it. I'm having even more problems, power steering pump popped, the car will NOT turn over since this morning.. had a new starter fitting and still the same problem so they are checking all the electrics.£££££££££££

I've gave up, went a picked up a range sport today and will sell this bag of sh1t or give it the mrs's. - never again will I buy a bmw, ever.

Thats quite ironic that you bought a RR Sport because you are fed up with things going wrong on your BMW.
You spent more on that than the BM and I doubt your bills will be any less... Just saying IMO, although I do sympathise with having the issues you have and having to for out X amount for it.

Also your problem is subjective. Sounds like you just had bad luck. Nothing to do with BM's mate, its just the luck of the draw. If you can afford a new gear box without problem perhaps buying a warranty may have given some peace of mind... Something I would definitely recomend with a RR.

Mine is on 84k and 2002. Touch wood with both hands and feet, nothing apart from wear and tear so far and it runs sweet as a nut and I havent spent more than a service and some suspension bits and bobs that you would expect at that mileage.

I mean I know we said maintenance on these cars can be hard but you seem to have experienced almost every problem in one go at the same time! That is just not normal.

I will say that honestly, a RR is just a terrible terrible buy (unless its the new one) and sadly you will know why soon enough, but I honestly wish you good luck with it.

Guys, I've had loads of BMW's and had endless problems with all of them.

I don't mind maintaining a car.. but it feels like every time I buy a BMW, everything falls to bits. Apparently this X5 is now "perfect" with all the things fixed. However I just lost trust and patience with it, it's almost like I new this would happen. They explained it like the previous owner didn't maintain it and I'm now having 3 years worth of maintenance done in one go?

Also it was a private sale, the range was from a garage so I at least have some parts warranty on it.

I thought BMW was a quality car? knowingly fit with poor quality starter motors until they were caught out? that's 2 that have failed now, one at 86 and one at 54 miles. Gearboxes blowing up at 70k? manifolds cracking at 70k? come on, they are made of cheap shit.

A bmw owner once called my q7 a poor mans bmw. Jesus, that car never cost me a penny

Audi's aren't that bad for build quality. I think everyone agrees on that. The problem with Audi's is the driving experience is always a bit boring. The Q7 is like driving a barge compared to an e70.

If you had got another Q7 I wouldn't be worried for you. The problem with RR is that they have that same problem that you are trying to escape - some of the parts they use/used are just terrible quality and break. The other problem is that they are generally more expensive to fix. Hopefully with a warranty and buying from a dealer you will be okay though.

What year is yours? My dad has a 2012 at the moment which he bought from new so luckily everything has been done under warranty. He's waiting for his 2014 to arrive in a few months!

im afraid i have to disagree, in that my first 01 x5 was a heap of shite, everything went on it, my second was a high milage when i got it with full service history, and i did 40k and did nothing to it, really, also the rrs i have is high milage full service and it looks and drives like new, i think the key is to do your research and buy a car with all the history thats had everything done, also a very good check when viewing of everything and i mean everything and people get too exited and should be prepared to walk away...

take recently last week i went for the e91, waited a while to find one in that colour/spec (2 months no rushing), travelled 311 miles to view 622 mile round trip but i was still prepared to loose £150 worth of fuel money rather than buy a bag of shite, i was so long on test drive 45 min the dealer rang halfway through thinking we had either pinched it or got lost (my reply i arnt handing over my hard earned after a run round the block), get back and go through all the reciepts invoices etc etc and bought it.

but people do rush into things then find there a lemon when its too late, when i bought my first 01 x5 i was young nieve and excited about getting an x5 (all mates had corsa's etc), i rushed and regretted it, ever since i check everything
