Please Help!! Cant get started after cut out!

Post by radaudiodesigns » Sat Apr 26, 2014 7:14 pm

Hi Guys, New to the forum!
Looking for your advice in diagnosing a starting problem with my 2004 E53 X5 3.0D.
The car recently had the turbo replaced, and I’ve done about 30 miles since it came out of the garage – all around town. I went to give it a run down the motorway, and as I got onto the on-ramp the car lost all acceleration and I rolled to a stop on the side of the on ramp and the car cut out. It would not restart and was towed back home.
First thing I did was change the battery, as after trying to crank a few times, it would die. Unfortunately, this hasn’t solved the starting problem.
Next I removed the glove box to try and locate the fuel pump relay – as I couldn’t hear the fuel pump priming, but I can’t seem to locate it (See below picture) any advice on location would be great.
I also lifted the rear seat and checked voltage to the fuel pump – this showed as 0V….
The car is cranking strong, but won’t fire – I don’t think fuel is getting to the front.
I’ve also noticed that the 4x4 light is illuminated constantly, and there is also no power to the air con centre console, which used to come on at ignition 2. Finally I’ve noticed that the whirry fan noise that used to come on when I unlocked the car with the remote is not coming on either.
I’ve plugged in my code reader and get the following – which I believe is just related to the electronic issue of fuel being sent to the front (which would explain why the car cut out).
4321 – Delivery Control Valve
4351 – Rail Pressure Control Valve
41A2 – Charge Air-Pressure Controller
4BC2 – Air Mass Flow Sensor
4822 – A/C Capacity Output
4BC7 – Intake Air temperature sensor
4203 – Glow Control Unit
3EC0 – Camshaft Sensor
3EC1 – Camshaft Sensor
Really appreciate any input, as I’m really at a loss.
To Recap –
• No power to fuel pump & can’t hear when ignition 2
• 4x4 light on constantly
• Cannot locate fuel pump relay – Can you see in pic?
• No Power to the heater console

Cheers

If you had the battery off then the 4x4 light does sometimes come on.  Once you get the car started then simply moving the steering from lock 2 lock should clear it.  Best to do it while moving very slowly so as not to overload the steering.

Looking at the whole list, are you certain no connectors have been missed on the top of the engine?  The MAF is also that side above the turbo and the fuel rail system & wiring behind it under the engine cover.

Were any of the a/c parts knocked as the pipe work & wiring etc to the compressor is all the same side as the turbo ISTR.

A lot of those faults appear to be around the top & right side of the engine which is where a turbo change would have been in an around.  Any common earth point that might have been missed?

If it was all fine before, then it might well be linked to the recent work.

Thanks Guys, found the fuel pump relay. Unfortunately this doesnt appear to be the issue, having tested it with another confirmed working relay.

Is there anything easy I can check myself before sending it back into a garage? Its sooo frustrating!!
