webasto smoking and smell of fumes inside.

Post by TimX5 » Tue Nov 25, 2014 9:41 pm

Having read up on when the webasto heater kicks in depending on.. (outside temp and engine temp ) mine seems to start up as it should , is it normal that it bellows out loads of smoke and stinks of fumes inside the cabin or should it burn cleaner , is it not igniting correctly any ideas please.

Should burn cleanly after first ignition.  Sounds like it needs a bit of a clean firstly.  I think there's a how to on her somewhere.

You shouldn't get any fumes in the cabin, the exhaust runs to under the F/N/S floor. Maybe it's cracked or has a hole in it ?

Yeh seen the exhaust and all is fine , I think it's just the amount of smoke it chucks out that you can smell it inside .

I went out last night in the car and a short distance from home I was in standing traffic , the webasto  kicked in and bellowed loads of smoke out and I could smell it inside , then traffic moved and we drove off.

I'm wondering if this is causing the problem with the fumes I have in the cabin. I have searched on "webasto" and found 192 search results on here but have been through them all and found nothing on cleaning the unit - does anyone have any knowledge or links on how to do this? I found some stuff on youtube but is a different webasto unit

Thanks
Robert

Have you got the same problem with your webasto  Smee or is it the manifold that's leaking.

actually thinking about this further (and working on the assumption that the Webasto is, in all other respects, working fine) I don't think that it is the Webasto as the fumes problem happens even when the temp is above 5 degrees, and if as I say, it is working fine, then it wouldn't be coming on above 5 and its its not on then it wont be producing fumes

Look at all of the door seals.  It might be coming in via the tailgate, or doors if there is a gap.

See if there are any missing or misplaced chassis bungs, especially in the wheel well that might be allowing crap into the cabin.  I can't remember if there any air vents (not a/c connected ones) in the rear quarter panels that allow air out.  If they are the 'flap' type then one may be stuck open perhaps?
