Hi all,
I am just in the middle of a rear brake swap on my facelift 05 diesel.

I do not seem to be able to get the disc off or away from the handbrake shoes, is there a knack or special tool for it?
getting dark.....many thanks

Have you slackened the handbrake shoes off enough, little ratchet wheel inside the drum, you get to it through the little hole.
Sorry if you've already done this, but it usually catches a few people out.
Nearly forgot, special tool is usually a hammer or soft mallet of some kind, it's needed to get the disc/drum over the corroded bit where the brake shoes for the handbrake don't touch.

Use TWO big copper/soft hammers & wallop the disk/drum each side LOTS....
It will take plenty of clonking if the shoes are catching the drum inner - but it's often the way if the retainer springs are a bit soft with age.

While you're swapping disks, may be an idea to swap the handbrake shoes at the same time.
Get new springs & caps too fro Flea-Bay

Hi,
Thanks for the help chaps, I didnt realise there was the self adjuster to undo, did that and it just popped off with a tap of my plastic hammer, replaced the handbrake pads and disc and pads, disc wasnt too bad but at £114 for the full back set both sides then no point at all in doing bits.....one side done in an hour and a half ish, will do second one (driver side) tomorrow night after work.
will the brake lining light vanish when I have replaced the other side and sensor or do I need to plug my p.c. in to do it?
....Again...many thanks for the quick replies :-)

The wear warning will most likely go out once the vehicle gets no sensings for a few miles.

New wear sensor will clear the warning - or should.

There you go Chelsea - Richard X5Sport is the keeper of the sacred knowledge.

I have learned that these machines LEARN of their new bits fitted and adapt accordingly.
Shame my lady friend is not as smart as my X5
