Same box regardless of engine.  The only variation is whether or not it's a facelift.

My 2005 with the 6-speed ZF box was rebuilt by A1 Premier Transmissions, Biggleswade, and cost £2,200 in 2009.

If the Mechatronics computer (mounted under the box above the gear oil sump) gets damaged than add another £1,500 to that.  Mine needed that as well, but that's a worst case if both are affected.

The pre-facelift boxes are supposed to be a bit cheaper so could be £1,500 to £1,800 according to the many threads on here about it.

My repair included new torque converter, oil pump, major overhaul kit and gaskets/filters/oil etc plus 17.5 hours of labour charges.

Yes, all in.  Warranty Direct paid.  The bill to me was £50 plus £60 to BMW for diagnostics.  They wanted £7,500 to change the box - no repairs carried out only a swap out!

The box is used in all sorts of vehicles including Landrover

now then..............warranty direct. i have been asking questions on the subaru forum regarding warranty companies and i think these guys were mentioned

it is something i would very much be interested given the price of putting things right on the x5, did they try to worm their way out of it at all?

Nope.  I had to pay the diagnostics - normal on all their policies - plus a £50 excess and they made all of the arrangements including recovering it from the BMW Dealer that my breakdown recovery lot had taken it to.

Needed them for our fuel pump relay issue a year or two later and again they paid - apart from diagnostics and excess.  That time we had a £210 bill which if memory serves was about half.

What they won't cover is wear & tear plus the in car entertainment/nav/CD player items unless you get additional cover.  I think the 'Luxury Car' cover with Dealer labour cover was just under £500 a year at the time.

If you drop dealer cover, or limit what you want covered it will reduce the cost by quite a bit.

In my case the torque converter sprague clutch broke and the box disintegrated internally after losing its oil pressure.  I can see a dry clutch being classified as fair wear and tear, but harder to take that line with a wet clutch pack - and there are lots of them - or brake pack inside a box.

It will depend upon mileage though.

One tactic to take with WD is to feign disinterest.  They'll be back to you within a couple of days with a lower premium.. :)

im surprised they didnt say something like "we will pay for the  part that failed but nothing that failed due to it failing"

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)
