why does gearbox transmission fluid change cost so much?
why does gearbox transmission fluid change cost so much?
I have been to 2 indys and they want to charge (or service) about £420 & £320 respectively.
I am not great at DIY, but looking at the ZF oil change youtube video, they do make the oil change process look pretty easy.
It almost looks like it will take less time than changing pads & discs on one axel
So why so expensive?
Also is the transfer box/case a separate oil enclosure from the gearbox?

Re: why does gearbox transmission fluid change cost so much?
If you take of VAT and a couple of hours labour the dearest quote will leave about £200 for the service kit and Trans fluid. Price difference could easily be on the type/cost of Fluid alone.
Against the cost of a rebuilt box?
The transfer box is separate I would also change the Diff oil front and rear while your under there

Ouch! But the fluid is expensive and the change out procedure isn't just empty & drain. It has to be running and at the right temp. All adds up rapidly!

Re: why does gearbox transmission fluid change cost so much?
I paid £180 Inc vat at a indy who specialises in bmw , range rovers , merc etc
Re: why does gearbox transmission fluid change cost so much?
I went to an Auto Gearbox specialist. He was overhauling ZF gearboxes day in and day out. They are your best bet, as an Indie has to be a Jack of all trades, where a gearbox specialist knows just about gearboxes.
I paid £170 + vat for a gearbox service, oil and filter/ pan and a seal that is changed as they tend to leak on these boxes.

Dare I ask who that was out of interest?

timx5, Horizon,
Those prices are good!
While I moaned about the price I am quoted, I don't understand why yours was so cheap considering the
But I don't understand how cheap because the oil, filter and gasket/pan will cost close to £100 at least ..... Making the labour cost even cheaper.
I am still a little bit confused about the amount of it needed.
Bits I have read on the forum suggest 7-8L of oil is needed. However if you remove the drain plug and pan you only have about half that amount. So where is the rest of the oil?

Some will still be in the torque converter,on other manufacturers there is a extra drain plug for this purpose.

Thanks
So Will hope that the shop just make sure that they get the oil out ... somehow.....
How easy is it to remove the car undertray ?, I would like to inspect the leak myself to see if it is from the drain plug or gasket ..

Are you sure it's transmission fluid or engine oil from top part of engine?

the prices they quote for a rebuild seem fair, does that include fitting/removal aswell?

It says gearbox and torque converter only, so imagine that could be dropping off your old box, service exchange.
Prices are negotiable depending on the form of payment
