Brake Upgrade?

Post by grumpywurzel » Tue Mar 22, 2016 10:07 am

Hi guys,

First post so be gentle  :P

I am getting the X5 re-mapped on Saturday, the question I have is this- Is the OEM Braking system still up to the job or does anyone recommend upgrading the Brakes too?

Would this just be a change to the Discs and Pads or include the Calipers too? I do like the idea of a nice shiney Brembo Caliper sat in behind the wheel but I am not sure if I can justify (well I can to myself, so I guess that's all that matter lol) the high price tag! Would I just need to upgrade the front brakes only or do the rears need doing as well?

Cheers

Garry

Personally I never had any issue with the OEM brakes.  I didn't hoon about but at no time did I ever feel insecure.

If you are doing journeys up and down the Alps where more brake use is needed then it might be worth a change.

Thanks for that mate, I was concerned that squeezing some power out of the old girl might require some beefier brakes. Then on the other hand it might be that the OEM stuff looks a bit boring.....

In two minds to upgrade to some sexier looking stuff, vented or drilled discs with bigger calipers or just leave it as is  :-[

OEM discs are vented, do you mean grooved . I believe grooved discs are very noisy, I would hate that.

Hi, I have solid discs on the car at the moment, so yes I am looking at drilled/grooved I guess :) , as I am going for remap I am going to have to declare that MOD anyway, not sure if fitting better brakes will raise it lower the premiums???

when I was with AXA insurance, I was told by them that they wouldn't insure MODIFIED cars, this even included fitting chrome tailpipe tips to my exhaust, just the push on type, as they were not as it left the factory.
Enquire  and get a confirmation email before you do anything.

Declared all mods, had to change from Hastings to Admiral. Just had the engine remap done, very impressed with how much more refined the car is through the power band. She wasn't a slouch before but goes like a scalded cat now. Seems the lag at 1500 rpm has gone too

Allan Jeffrey over in Plympton,  not sure where u are tho. He is very well thought of in the Scooby world,  does a fair bit of high end work in the racing scene too
