Hi

I have a '12 plate x5 46k and noticed that when the steering is on full lock i can feel vibration thru the accelerator pedal and steering wheel thought it was the front tires which were scrubbed on the outside so i replaced them and the problem is still there.  So being under warranty i booked the car in at my local bmw dealership who gave me a hire car for the day then confessed they forgot to look at the issue...so my wife retrieved the x5 and gave them a piece of her mind! So has anyone else had this problem and what was the outcome? its low speed up to 10mph where the issue can be felt.

Transfer box, just had mine replaced, I could feel the vibration while cruising to a stop (off the accelerator) in the end, it did take a fair while to get that bad though. Only 28k miles on mine.

Same here, front transfer box replaced at BMW for £2700 inc labour. Fortunately I had extended warranty cover :)

Update - main dealer diagnosed judder as a software update car due back next week

So got the car back from dealer who have updated all the software but this type of vibration is still there. Dealer used the term gearbox slamming so egs update now means that car is adapting to my driving style.

I would describe the feeling as if the clutch is slipping when you accelerate and probably occurs more frequently in lower gears. so the loan car i had for the week was a 218i gran tourer brand new 1.5ltre 3cyl engine and was silky smooth....x5 did not drive like this a year ago when i purchased it from main dealer, still under bmw warranty.

Anyone else experienced this type of issue?

if the car is under warranty tell them to sort it ,it is the transfer box ,when i got my car i had the same issue from day 1 ,BMW said they couldn't find the fault ,yet i could i took a shit sales rep out and a shit mechanic out in the car and they said they didn't notice anything ,yet when i said i was going to park the car in there show room window and stop paying for the piece of shit ,they got the message ,i took a Mechanic out in the car who hadn't been in the loop with a rep ,i took him for a spin and with 2 minutes he said its the transfer box ,he said it usually happens on X1 AND X3S and its due to the tyres not being BMW star rated ,he then jumped out of the car and checked all my tyres ,to his disappointment i told him that BMW changed my tyres ,he said well this is going to cost the £3500 ,my point is that they knew what the problem was but tried to hang on to my warranty expiry and then hit me with the cost

Transfer box issue. Remove fuse no92 and check if still does it.

Update - dealer confirmed transfer box needs to be replaced. (Software update did nothing).

Dealer still has the car and waiting for the parts - but will ask for the cause of failure since they did detailed tests for bmw warranty since car was over 3yrs old.

I think it's a fairly common problem, they try to blame it on non-star rated btw approved tyres or a difference of greater than 3mm tread depth between the front and rear axles, personally I think it's a serious design flaw

Collected car from main dealer and it is now silky smooth and a pleasure to drive.( I have always used bmw star approved tyres) Best thing about the extended warranty is that it is paperless and pain free.

Not sure if this is the same as what is happening in my new (to me) E70, luckily under full AUC warranty. 
When I turn hard left or right and reverse or go forwards very slowly, the wheels feel as if they are slipping- only happens at very slow speeds, car otherwise drives perfectly.  It doesn't happen except at full or almost full, steering lock, and proceeding in reverse or forwards very slowly. No fault codes noted via Carly adaptor.

I thought I would wait till I changed over to winter wheels next month or so before racing off to the dealers. The current wheels and tyres are as supplied by BMW when I bought it - style 215, 21" crazy wide wheels (325/35R21 I think, and 285/35/R21,  from memory. They are star rated tyres, runflats 
Winters are style 177 18" as advised by BMW -255/55R18. On star rated tyres, runflats.

Is this the same as the "judder" being described here?    Was hoping to have a break from frequenting the main dealers for a while.........at least its under warranty and the first year is an absolute no quibble one.  Car has done 54000 miles.

I had something very similar, took it to 2 different dealers, 1st blamed my winter tyres, and so I put the "summer" wheels (oem 20" with RF * rated back) issue was still there. Still no errors registered.

Second dealer checked it and said no errors on the diagnostics computers, but said it could possibly be the transfer fluid needing changing (supposedly lifetime I had thought), went ahead and changed it, and the problem has completely disappeared.

They did start banging on about the tyres when I called this morning - spoke to service manager himself, who I know quite well after years of X5s!  But as they are BMW alloys with the correct tyres on, he seems to think its the transfer box.  I know it'll be sorted under the warranty, its just such a nuisance really, to have to unpack the car and take it in - Had hoped that after spending £30k on a AUC which I have had less than a month, it would give me a bit of a breather from main dealers workshops. [emoji22]
