Shuddering........`

Post by love154 » Mon Feb 07, 2011 3:57 pm

my cousin has Just bought a 55 X5 3.0Diesel, having a few problems with the car shuddering while going between 65 - 75 mph.
I've had the tracking, balancing and wheel alignment all done but it still shudders, also happens with the cruise control on and off.

thanks

What condition are the tyres and rims in? Any dents, nicks, unusual wear on the tyre treads?

What happens if you gently hold the steering at this speed - in a safe area of course - does the wheel wobble gently?

There is a bit of a nick out of a rear alloy but all tyres are pretty new.
If I hold the wheel gently it shakes quite hard, tends to be worse going up or down hill.

Thanks

Sounds like the balance is still off to me, unless you have a bent wheel rim.

Your discs could be warped but it may also be worth checking your wheel bearings!
Another thing to check could be your track rod ends. ;)

If the shudder is under braking then i would say discs.I have recentley noticed a shudder under braking at higher speeds and after an investigation on the weekend i need new pads and disks  .......... oh well more money more parts the car is starting to show it's mileage at the moment and has cost a small fortune lately. The price we pay to maintain our precious x's i suppose :)

I agree sounds the same as mine and mine is a wobbly wheel..same speed aswell. Have you tried swapping a wheel at a time to see.

Oh and what about the spare....Don't need to cane it for long, just enough to see if it still shakes your fillings out.

I had shuddering around 60 and much more pronounced under braking. Was the thrust arm bushes. Car has only done 70K and its a well documented and common problem on the E53.
