2004 E53 3.0d Auto - over 45mpg no remap

Post by Smeeagain » Mon Sep 12, 2016 8:53 pm

On a long journey this week over two days 600 miles Portsmouth to Inverness. Filled up set the trip meter and off we go. Ive always been a bit sceptical about the computer mpg but the "range" has never let me down ie if it says you've got fifty miles left then you dont run out of fuel after another ten miles. I accept however that is making a calculation based on current conditions, driving style etc

Nevertheless Id planned to stop roughly halfway in lancashire. Pulling into the carpark I noticed Id covered 276 miles with range saying there was still 620 miles available (and its minimum of 620 as it doesnt show higher than that on that year), so looking like an 896 mile range as I say subject to traffic, conditions etc
896 miles on a 90 litre tank is 9.955 miles per litres. 4.546 litres per gallon means a consumption of 45.2 miles per fallon (assuming if course nothing changes).

All a bit theoretical I know but happy with that.

So another problem with the diesel version is identified, all the sums to work out MPG. Take care boys you will end up driving like Miss Daisies chauffeur trying to match your best numbers.

Now with the V8 its soooo simple, for the last 7k the computer in mine has indicated 19.8 mpg motorway, lanes or towing two fat horses in a trailer it just stays the same. No pencil paper or abacus needed

Errrrr yrs we have computers too .... As mentioned at the start of my post and elsewhere too, theyre not accurate. Dont (necessarily) believe your computer. For yesterdays consumption it said 46.5mpg which was fairly accurate, but as ever, overstated. Unless you actually have done the sums or a brimful to brimful test, then you cannot know fir sure that is the consumption youre getting just cos the computer says so. If it said you were getting 80mpg would you believe it, much as your wallet may love it to be so .....

Since replacing the headunit I can't reset the MPG, but I can live with that.. My readout says 27.7, mixture of around town and dual carriageways. Remapped diesel and I have a very heavy right foot. I'll take that  :)

Oh Smeeagain my tongue was firmly in my cheek when I wrote that!!
Do any of us actually buy a 2 ton + 4x4 and expect economy? Well maybe some do I guess, as long as your happy with what your getting which you clearly are (and I with mine) enjoy it they are impressive figures for any 4x4.

Yes quite happy (and glad you are too!. Each to his own :)

My point was more about how "economic" it is actually given that is weighs 2ton+ and is as aerodynamic as a brick .... :)

Just to add to the debate I just got back this morning from Ireland having covered 980 miles. When I set off the computer (all I go by) said I was getting 17 mpg and I had a 1/4 tank of fuel. Managed to do the whole 980 on gas the computer at one stage got to 18.1mpg  On the return from the port this went down to 17.5. I was not hanging about. Now bearing in mind that the gas price on average was 52ppl less than 1/2 petrol costs I consider that from a price point of view its equal to 34/36mpg from a thumping great V8. Brilliant :)

I had lpg  conversion to my 4.4 as soon as I purchased it at 4 years old (it is a 2002) in 2006, I reckon I get the equiv of 34/35 to the gallon and have covered about 47,000 miles in that time, so it has well and truly paid for itself.
Anyone thinking of this conversion I would say ''go ahead'', but there are a couple of things to ensure are done with the coversion, if anyone is interested I would list them on a dedicated post.

I never managed more than 32 MPG in mine on a run. My van is a 1.6 diesel, supposed to be good for 65 mpg. Never had more than average of 43 mpg, must be too aggressive on the right boot

Most lpg systems on the X5 have the tank(donut) in lieu of the spare wheel.
Mod 1 :  have all the wheels/tyres injected with puncture liquid, will save you many pounds in new tyres as no more punctures, remember you have no spare.
Mod 2 : make sure the pipe from tank to engine (it is a long one running the length of the car) is a flexible hose, cos if you have to lift the tank and you have solid wall pipes they will fracture on tank lift.

also get an engine lifter with a hydraulic lifting jib, it is no fun trying to lift an lpg donut with 60 litres of gas in it.

fit a new battery !! if you are having a new system

Have as large as possible donut ( mine is a 95 litre Stako).

Just a few ideas. I learnt the hard way.

Thanks for that, like the puncture liquid idea, will get that done. Unfortunately got solid wall pipes,  have put in new battery. Still went flat in Ireland. Hard to believe but my dear old (90) mum doesn't have anything with USB ports so had to have ign on to charge phone from USB in X5. Lesson learned, should have remembered to take charger.
PS
Thats a big tank, thought mine was as big as would fit 85ltrs.
