Was is recommended for a 3.0d xdrive 2010. I have a thermostat housing go a few weeks ago which was replaced. It was topped up with water only. What is the best stuff to use

Go to BMW Dealer and buy coolant premix.  That way you have the correct anti-corrosives in the mix that your engine needs.  You will need to remove some water to make room.

If you only have water in the system then you might as well remove the bottom radiator hose, drain what you can and refill from the reservoir.  If you do still have coolant then add 100% from BMW.  It won't do any harm to have too much, but too little could result in a frozen engine!
