Steering Wheel

Post by henrym3 » Mon Dec 12, 2016 9:14 pm

Anyone fitted the E46 M3 steering wheel. If so is it a straight fit, any downsides, still see all of the dials, I like the idea of it being fatter, it's just I can get one of a mate for £30,which after looking on e-bay is really cheap.

Are they smaller in diameter and do they have all the tech gubbins on them?

They are a bit smaller, can't give any figures though, much fatter and yes they got all the gubbins exactly the same layout as the x5, been doing some reading and has the same air bag as well.

Make sure you have the right Airbag...

The other thing is the Slip Ring and I think a bit of Wiring (think you can buy a plug n play loom) to connect into your Gearknob so that the paddles work for shifting gears.

Looks nice, but really for posing.

Thanks for all this information which I hope I won't need as I already have paddles on my current wheel so I'm hoping plug and play. I totally agree with  Lezmtaylor and your allowed to do that even at my age.

I've got paddles on my 3 ER only used them a couple of times,  bit of a novelty, I sometimes catch them when pulling out a junction and it stays in M2 for a bit which isnt a problem really.
I found that if you use them in D it reverts back to automatic when you least expect it, so when you want to have a B road blast using the paddles you must move the stick over to sports mode and it's miles better

Must admit you took me by surprise there, as I said I already have paddles on the x5 and mine are right for up left for down. Thought all BMW's were like that. So it must be in the way they are wired like you said.

Are you sure you aren't the bloke that sold one of the E30's that Clarkson May and Hammond bought and sent to the lab for testing :))

Haha, I've had an E30 325i, but it wasn't any of the ones they did the forensic tests on, took me ages to get the missing first wife's blood out of the boot carpet.
