What suspension do i buy now?

Post by rj1986 » Fri Jan 13, 2017 1:51 pm

I need to get some new airbags for the rear as they've started to sag on one side more often than not.

SO i go on the website and there is 2 options, sports and non sports.

So i check my Vin and build sheet and find:

E70
3.0d
2007

S220 Self-levelling suspension
S226 Sports suspension settings
P330 Sports package

Now the bit that confuses me - I got a pair of front springs swapped out as one had snapped last year by a local (non BMW or indy) garage.
They used Lesforjors springs, and after a quick google -I'm pretty sure they fitted springs "for non sports"

So 2 questions:
What is the difference for springs for sports/non-sports
And what do i order now for the rear if i indeed have sport "setup" but standard front springs and BMW original bellows?

Hi,

Tough question to answer. Its personal preference.
Rear suspension is self levelling ( if you use the bags ). Thus if you want a firmer ride at the back go for the sport bag or if you want it softer /  more comfortable go for the normal bags. Also are you running run flat tyres or normal ones. ? That will influence the ride.

There is no right or wrong or fixed rules ......I.E if you have gone soft up front you don't have to go soft at the back. In fact sometimes it makes sense to mix and match depending on what you want to achieve  handling wise.

As an example , back in the day when the MK2 escort was king , I found the best set up was hard up front , to stop diving under braking and stop body roll, but soft at the back to allow for traction and stop axle tramp. That's why when on level ground it had that slight nose up attitude, but you could make that car dance.

Same with you here............if you persistently carry full / heavy loads then perhaps a harder set up would be better, but if you live where the roads are rutted or have a bad back then softer may be  the way you want to go.

If you are happy with the current set up then replace like with like.

Your choice. Of course you have to have the same set up per axle. You cant have one soft bag on the left rear and one hard one on the right rear ( you can but it will handle funny and you are not racing at an oval track ).

Is that true ?
Different bags between m sport & SE ?
I thought the difference was in the shock absorbers, Auxillary shock absorbers and girth of the Anti roll bars

There is several aftermarket bags Aerosus & Arnott to name but two, though don't think there spec specific as a above......... or have thicker membrane between models.....

It appears every day is a school day! Just checked Aerosus site,

Hi

If you have a look on realoem website there apppears to be 3 options for the airbags depending on which set up you have, but remember to check the car details as I have put in a car produced in September 2007 and you may have to change those details first.

The type of set up is stated, but not what difference really means. The spring and the shock absorber is shown with various options in the other sections,

I would discuss the options with either the BMW parts / service technician or Indy garage as to what you are trying to achieve from changing from your existing set up, as trial and error can be costly.

Hope that helps
