Head Unit Replacement

Post by Beamer » Tue Feb 14, 2017 4:03 pm

Hi guys, I am getting a  car spark to replace my X5 head unit tomorrow. Now I have been told that all the power for the X5 head unit is in the boot and that I will need a full wiring loom to come from the boot forward. I have also been told that I can move the existing head unit to the glove compartment and feed off it for power. It would also be able to keep the on board computer facilities if I do this.

Any thoughts ?

Hi Tinker,

yes I do believe you can install it into the glove box and take the power from there, would be really good to keep the OBC.

Should put up some pictures of the finished install.

Yes Gavp, I will see what he thinks tomorrow. I was quoted £40 to replace the head unit with the one I have here, can't remember the name of it. I have no doubt that it will be more expensive knowing the guy fitting it.

I have a dynavin unit in mine and wish the previous owner had done the same.

I have no doubt that it will be more, not sure how involved it will be as having to remount the unit in the glove box might be tricky.

Hopefully someone else on here will have done it to advise, I think I read someone had installed it in the boot before.

After I installed an Eonon Android unit in my vehicle, I relocated my MID to the rear, but I had no factory navigation nor DSP or CD stacker. That meant I had spare connectors and physical space. There is some info over on xoutpost.com where others have attempted to shift the factory screen to the rear, but I haven't heard of success. I have rarely used the MID since, but its there fully functional if needed. To set clock etc. I run the app Torque Pro on my Eonon, this gives me all the OBC displays plus a lot more.
This is the link to my post on xoutpost.

Well bollox to that. Car spark says I need a wiring loom from front to back. Reckons full days work £150 not including the price of the loom. What a pain in the arse this is turning out to be.

Home now with the old head unit still there.

I did think £40 to fit was a tad cheap! They took a full day to fit my new headunit

I have an xtrons unit. Now to try and find a full length wiring loom. If you don't mind me asking what we're you charged.
