Rear LED Tail Lights

Post by dark_stranger » Wed Mar 08, 2017 10:33 am

Guys, there a lots of threads about fitting rear LED taillights, but want to get some upto date info.  Im looking to install some on an 04 plate and therefore aware I need to fit an inline resistor.  Have anyone fitted LED taillights and if so, what lights did you get? what resistor did you fit? did you get any dash errors?  Pros/Cons? would you buy again?  what was the fit like? Has anyone had any fail LED's?

I think that covers it.

I turned the error warning off with BMW Scanner 1.4.0
Handy tool to have for diagnostics as well and other things.

Already have one of those, but believe the leds lights flicker due to giving less resistance then bulbs and want to have everything in place before ordering the lights.

there are 3 types of Bulb check in the LCM
Cold (Which gives you the flicker when they are off)
Hot
and a current measurement

You can turn either, some or all off
(but not sure if the 1.4 will do all of them)
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

I fitted LED tail lights  they came with resistors  but the lights themselves still flickered ( ever so slightly ) but i wasn't happy so replaced resistors with  SAMWHA  SD  Capacitors  35v  4700uF  85 deg c  (m) job done .

light are bright  trouble free and give a modern look , i never had and dash bulb warnings

I fitted LED lights to mine and they look great, really glad i did them.
I had a very slight flicker in mine when i orignally fitted them and the lights didnt look really that bright, but after fitting capictors to them the flicker was gone and the lights brighter.
The Herd is selling some and looking at his pictures, and from seeing them in person, they have capictors already fitted so you just need to plug them in and your good to go, no errors

I'm planning getting smoked as the car is black.  What capictor did you fit, and where did you get it from?

Capacitor value is given above.  They should be as easy as resistors, but if the are of an Electrolytic type then there will be a +ve side and that must go to the +ve feed.  Electrolytics go bang is connected backwards - a favourite trick pulled on many an apprentice  O:-)

Also, as the light adverts state upto 10/03 models, is the wire connections the same or do they need to be altered?
