2 x Green Lights and Timer ???

Post by kanewesley » Thu Mar 16, 2017 8:06 am

Had X5 almost a year now, 2006 3.0D sport uplift.
I've gone from seeing 5 x green service lights on the dash to 2 x green lights and a timer symbol.

I've looked in the handbook and can't find EXACTLY what this combination means???

And before anyone jumps down my throat (as happens a lot) I've seacrch this forum "Green Service Lights Timer" and can't find owt.

I do realise it's something to do with service intervals.

Is it telling me a service is coming up or am I overdue??
Is it telling me what kind of service needs doing?

Be grateful for any advice...Thank You.

The 5 green lights go down over time - so a service is due fairly soon if you have two left.  The timer means your brake fluid is due to be changed now (2 yearly intervals).
The info is all in the owners manual but its easy to overlook.

Hello,

Its not in any of the BMW books .  On both my E53's and E39  the green lights are  a count down to service interval . ( Oils service, Inspection I , inspection II) . The orange clock symbol ............ comes up ANNUALLY  and is for your annual inspection. ( body anticorrosion and general visual inspection )

Brake fluid  should be changed every 2 years.

...........""In order to ensure the safety and reliabilityof the brake system, have thebrake fluid changed every two years by a BMW Sports Activity Vehicle center."

"Coolant : Be sure that the coolant mixturecontains the year-round ratio of 50:50 water and antifreeze/corrosion protection. This mixture provides protectionagainst freeze-ups down to approx.-34 7 (-37 6). Replace the coolantevery three years."

On later cars, post 2008 I think, BMW set the clock to come on every 2 years which tallies with the brake fluid change. USA cars don't have this function.

Like I said on my E39 which i still have the light comes on every year.

Regards,
Nat.

The lights don't necessarily go down over time - or rather it its not specifically linked to time as a factor. My understanding is that it is , as far as I recall, in some way related to oil condition. I do long motorway mileage and I don't drive hard. I can get 5000 miles between each light (yes that is 25k between services), whereas others only get 3000. So it very much depends on the OP's driving style and mileage as to how soon the service will be due

After the green light goes out there is an amber light and then a red light. I got a further 1000 miles after the green lights went out before the red light came on

Green lights are based on fuel consumption.  The system monitors how much fuel has gone through and sets the lights as each milestone passes.  I can't remember the actual figures now but it was when a set amount of fuel was used up.  10,000 litres springs to mind for some reason.  I used to get somewhere between 3,500 to 4,500 per lost green segment.  It's the Condition Based Service indicator..

Clock symbol on the E53 is as mentioned above, every two years to change brake fluid.  Used to be coolant as well but is now just brake fluid.  It is the Time Based Service indicator.
