webasto fuel pump

Webasto fuel pump, trying to get it fired up to see if it works.
i attached a 12v to the supply to the pump supply by unplugging the supply wire from the heater and even though i can make the pump tick by pulsing it with 12v still no fuel will get drawn up to the heater.  any ideas on that one ?  i was going to access underneath and have a look at the pump, maybe it needs priming but cant find info on this problem,  nothing happens either when i apply 12v to pin 1.  i thought i read that this overides everything but i get nothing  no fan noise either. Fuses ok  the odd thing is though,  if i set the timer inside for direct heat or set it to a timed start  then the fan starts up, shuts down after couple mins as no fuel getting drawn up.
