Auxiliary Power Adapter

Post by Colin » Tue Aug 15, 2017 8:12 pm

Been trying to find one of these adapters  ,  it plugs into the torch charging point in the glovebox and has a cigarette type outlet on the other end , seem to be rare and pricey now ,  some on ebay but stupid money .

Good grief - what a price!  Maybe just buy one of the torches and dismantle it carefully and solder in a cig lighter adapter on a cable as long /short as you want it to be so you have a permanent live when plugged in.  Even the torches are getting pricey, but can still be had for about £20.

The one on ebay was selling for $20 but i think they have none left but want to keep the advert running.
The last sale was 4 years ago.
You see it a lot where they put a silly price but it is just to keep it going i would like to know why it's done that way.
Edit
Have a look at this post on another forum.

The charge point in the glovebox switches off when the ignition is switched off  unlike the cigarette outlets which  stay live

Can I ask why you want to do this - what are you trying to achieve?

My car has no sunroof but there is a blank where the switch would go.
I fitted a double USB socket eBay jobby and connected it to the vanity light ideal for my dash cam plus a second outlet if I need one.

Far easier and cheaper to just piggyback a new dedicated supply.

I used the abs circuit for my phone charger, and apart from me knocking it out when reinstalling the glove box, which then presented an array of error lights, fixed by pushing it back in, it's been faultless.

There does appear to be a poor supply of switched positive circuits in the glovebox though, I intend to fit a dedicated fuse box with power from battery, triggered by a relay driven from the and piggyback. That way I can add lots more switched lives, on their own dedicated power supply, and out little demand on the abs. That will cater for the dash cam, additional charging points, permanent phone charger etc. And be cheap as chips.

Under a turbo swap presently (fingers crossed it fixes her!)
