Sat nav on my 2014 X5 has lost me

Post by Leesy180 » Sat Jul 14, 2018 4:46 pm

Hi all I was using my sat nav last weekend in my 2014 X5 and all was working fine then all of a sudden the signal went and since then the gps is all over the place and it thinks I’m probably 60miles from where I really am.
I’ve tried the reboot on the idrive system but nothing seems to work and I can’t get the system to reboot at all.
When the nav is on I’m driving through fields and the sea and a journey that would be 10 mins is saying an hour.
Any ideas what to do would be great is it a case for bmw to have a look at.

Thanks for the response. Planning on disconnecting the battery today but wondered would that mean I have to re register it or would that only be for a new battery.

Well I tried disconnecting the battery this morning for 20 minutes but still no joy. The sat nav still has me driving everywhere apart from a rd.
think I may have to call bmw about this one. Have read it might be the antenna in the shark fin but not definite. Anyone else have any ideas then I’m open to them.

My sat nav is on a hard drive so can’t update with a disc. I’ve now purchased the latest maps and still no joy.
It still can’t find me.
Think it’s time to call bmw

Sounds like the GPS receiver or the antenna has gone bye bye/cable failed.  Does your iDrive support automatic clock setting, or give position & altitude data?  Is that working?

The GPS antenna is inside the shark fin on the roof.  It’s a combined antenna with the TV, expanded smartphone, teleservices and emergency request system (emergency button up front above the front passengers heads).  Have any of those failed?

The gps positioning doesn’t change its numbers but the arrow on the screen moves.
Not sure on teleservices or sos.
Thought it may of been the antenna.
Any idea on prices. Would it be covered under warranty as I bought the car only 2 months ago from a 4x4 garage.
Thanks for the info.

Have a look at Realoem, use the last 7 characters of your VIN to pull up the right model, and from there pick the correct antenna part number (it depends upon what options you have).  That should enable a search in the usual places and a price of the parts.

Whether it is covered by warranty depends upon your warranty and any exclusions.  It isn’t a wear and tear part.  I haven’t found where the GPS receiver is hidden yet.  That might be inside the iDrive computer - which probably means a complete replacement.

Little update. I never got round to ringing bmw but the sat nav has started working again.
Any ideas now why it would drop its signal for 2weeks then all of a sudden start working again

Thanks all

Had it happen in my E53 once for a few days and like yours it recovered and never did it again.  It could be any of a number of things to do with the GPS receiver, antenna, clock, firmware, cabling etc etc.  Tracing issues like this is time consuming and expensive.

I use a Garmin unit as well as the car one now.  Mainly because the Garmin updates are free and it has live traffic which is also free and works faster than the OEM kit.  The unit is cheaper than just one update from BMW!

Well the sat nav has now stopped again. I was happily driving to the coast and came off the m25 onto the m23 towards Gatwick and I watched as the sat nav arrow slowly lost my position and took me off rd.
Now I’m totally lost what I can do as it’s not off all the time but not sure if it’s the idrive or the shark fin on top.
