Newbie in need

How smooth should the gear changes be on an X5 3D Sport Auto. It's our first auto and not sure what to expect. On start up in the morning the changes are more noticeable but after a short time are fine. It's a 2005 model with 59,000 on the clock. Also when the car is up to speed on the motorway there is a bit of a delay from putting the foot down and the car actually speeding up, not much but noticeable. Any advice would be appreciated. Gear change in my 4.8 is also very notchy when cold but apparantly that is just the way they are (so I've been told anyway). Soon goes though and is smooth to shift. Could be worthwhile seeing if you have the latest software for the gearbox.
