New Owner - firmware Question

Post by Johnny chimpo » Sat Dec 10, 2011 7:05 pm

Hi all, finally after weeks of looking at x5's I've managed to get one. It's a very tidy 2005 3.0d sport in sterling grey with full comms pack.

Anyway back to my question can anyone advise on how to upgrade the firmware to the latest level, which I think is v32?

Also interested in getting the latest map disc if anyone can advise on where to get one from?

Cheers for all help given folks!

Assuming this doesn't break the rules, then upgrading to V32 is very simple as long as you follow the instructions to the letter. If you don't then you risk 'bricking' your Mk4 nav computer. Details in the Nav section on Xoutpost. I did my old E53 using that site several times (from V27 all the way up to V32 over the years I owned mine). Or you can always ask your Dealer to do it. It takes less than 10 mins.

Map DVD discs are a very different area legally. OEM avail from BMW at suitably silly prices - £180 a pop! Anything else is as Sanj says - not for discussion here, and at your own risk!

Cheers for the welcome guys!

Sanj you have a PM....

X5Sport thanks for the info on firmware upgrades, Is the chance to "brick" the nav computer high, or is that just if I really screwed up the upgrade?

Really want to do it, but just weary that I could possibly knacker the wifes new car less than 2 days after getting it...

If you follow the OEM instruction sheet as held on Xoutpost and use the slowest CD write speed for the firmware as suggested then the risk is low. Do anything else and the risk increases. Bad discs are the usual cause for any issues, as they are when updating any firmware for cars, computers, routers etc. I never had an issue on the E53 or E46 in 6 years. For map discs I went OEM every tme.

apologies if it is a daft question as everyone seems to know what this except me - leaving aside the legalities that I can read between the lines on - what is V32 firmware. I have 2004 E53 x5 3.0 D Sport

Version that updates your Nav unit with faster re-route and 3D perspective - other things too. I can try to dig them out if you need?

3d is an option in the hidden menu if I remember correctly and you can tell your version from the numbers in the top left of the screen but I can't remember for toffee what they are without looking. What's the issue with the iPhone paring? Mines fine.

Think you turn radio off on the button then turn ignition off. Then turn ignition to position 2 press and hold select on nav unit till a new hidden screen pops up. It's something like that anyway. I got instructions from searching either on here or xoutpost forum.

thanks, i will have a go at this hidden menu and see how i go.

ive seen a few people with "tv in motion" on their sig, is that a feature of this new frimware upgrade?

the issue i have with bluetooth is it wont work! getting the activate phone message on screen, go through the sequence with the pairing button and nothing happens, although tonight i took the cover off and noticed 3 broken wires going into the big multiplug on underside of armrest. was going to just solder them back together at work tomorrow then give it a go. was looking on the web for a wiring diagram/list of whats what to see if they are to do with the button.

any help would be great.

The firmware upgrade will not give you tv in motion or fix the Bluetooth. But whT you have described has happened to others on here. Think someone even posted a pic, have a quick search. Sorry, on the phone at mo, not easy this way...
