You couldn't make this up...

Post by n1k85 » Fri Apr 13, 2012 9:12 pm

Hi Guys,

Not been on much recently, but over the last few months I've been doing a few odd jobs on the X5 :)

Firstly I had the whole side of the car repaired and re-painted from the accident damage that was there when I bought the car...

Then I bought a whole new set of 20" Tyres...

Then I replaced the rear wiper with an E70 one as the old one was broken.

Then I replaced the front Wipers with Bosch flatblades as the old ones were also worn out.

Then I bought and fitted a new door handle for the Rear Passenger Door as they damaged it while removing it for the paint job :headbang:

Then the only thing that was left to do was the 'bump strip' on the same door, as the old one was damaged and the repair garage had not replaced it (as we agreed)

So after driving around for 1.5 months without one fitted, I ordered the bump strip, picked it up from BMW, drove back home, peeled off the backing and fitted my shiny new bump strip and stood back and admired the car in it's finished state, looking better than I had ever seen it (since I bought it as an accident damaged car).

The sun was shining, the car was looking great and for the first time ever I had a complete, damage and trouble free X5 with a shiny new paint job.

That lasted all of 5 minutes when I tried to get back into the Drivers side and felt the handle 'snap' and wouldn't open the door :headbang: ...Typical!! I was only reading on here yesterday that someone has just had the same problem, it seems really common too!. I stripped the door down earlier and took out the carrier and saw that the tiny bit of metal that holds the pin spindle/spring in place has snapped off, so theres no way I can repair it! Now i'll have to wait till monday to order a new one! FML!

Yeah I know what you mean, the amount of people reporting the same issue with the drivers side front handle is astonishing! It's almost like a case of 'when' than 'if'...

and I know for a fact that I didn't yank it particularly hard or anything (i never do), I just gave it the usual gentle pull that is needed!

Did yours break in the same spot as mine? How much was the replacement from BMW?

Yes mate the break was in the top corner by the small loop over the spindle. I have changed loads of these always the drivers door , I don't tug hard at the handle either.
With cost discount I paid £60 from a main dealer , I think the retail cost is about £70.
