Satnav drive

Post by garethdeb » Fri May 04, 2012 4:35 pm

Hi folks
I replaced the laser in my mk3 drive this week bit no change, discs still eject back out. Any idea what else I can try?
Regards
Gareth
P.s. if anyone has a reasonably priced mk4 drive going spare I'd love to hear from you!

Did it fail 'in use' so to speak, or we're you doing a firmware update?

A quick trawl around the usual sites suggests it might still be a laser issue, a firmware update didn't take, or possibly a bad disc. You've probably tried all of the above, but what type of disc have you tried it with?

I fitted a brand new laser and deffo the correct one. Tried several different discs so kinda ruled that one out. Didn't know about firmware update, how do I go about that? Ie, what cables do I need and where to get the software.
Cheers all
Gareth

Firmware update is done via the disk as far as i know, so that could be problematic at the mo.

Was the laser change an easy job?

As above, firmware update I'd done via a CD that you put in instead of the map CD. Definitely not to be tried unless you know the unit is working as a failed update can 'brick' the nav computer - albeit you're in a similar state at present.

I haven't seen these things running without the lid on, but is the laser output visible? CD players usually use a visible red beam so you can see the laser glowing and at least prove it's lighting. After that it's either focus, position or the reader is not the problem and another part of the electronics is not playing.

Hi Rusty
Yes, laser change was easy, hardest part was making sure I got the right one! If it's the mk3 then it's a cd laser and also there's two types, a 2 pin and 4 pin, mine was the 2 pin. I just had to take mine part to make sure I was ordering the right one then live with the blue/white screen for a couple of weeks while the new laser came from Hong Kong.
I'll probably take it back out again if you want me to take any pics.
Cheers
Gareth
