X5 Spare wheel ?

Post by Legeek » Mon Jun 18, 2012 8:56 am

Hi,
I had my X5 for a couple of months now although with Holidays and a trip for work, I did not get to enjoy it as much as I would like.
I have a potentially very stupid question (but then again I am French so what can you expect from us lot  ;) )
I assumed that, since I have RTF on my X5, there would be no spare wheel so I never looked for one.
However, I found that there is a spare wheel compartment on my X5 and it has a spare wheel in it.
My X5 edition has 20" rims (315/35 front and 275/35 back) the spare wheel is a 235/65R17.
The overall diameter is similar for both, in case of issue, can I use this ? or it is one for EBAY ?
Only reason I ask is that I have been considering going non RTF as the ride is a little firm and since I have the spare wheel.. well....

hi there,
are you sure you dont have your wheels on the wrong way round?
the wider tyres should be on the back!!

the narrower spare tyre is standard on the x5 and can be used for emergencies but not high speed driving.
there shouldnt be any reason to fit NON runflats to your wheels.  :)

Yep sorry I did get the wheels the wrong way round. Reason to change is that the thread on my tires is getting low and since  I hear that with normal tyres as opposed to run flat, the ride is more comfortable I thought I'd give them a bash

Spare can be used upto 50mph as an emergency to get you on your way when the worst happens.

Also I'd definitely go non run flats to help the ride.

Toyo are good value for money.

Thanks Raj,
I looked at Toyos too as I will give them a try If I can find the sizes. I had them on my 530D before and also on my Range Rover and was quite impressed by the quality and grip

[/quote]i don't know what type X5 you have but if you have 4.6 or 4.8 the spare you have won't fit over calipers. in stateside most of the E53 X5 has the 235-65-17 all around. so the size is safe to ride even over 50 mph .

That is an option, but I couldn't be doing with trying to use the phones browser to navigate the full site. A small price to pay given the alternative :-

The 50mph limit is imposed as a mandatory safety speed limit in the UK (and possibly the EU too?) on all passenger cars as soon as you fit a different sized wheel as a spare, regardless of what the tyre might be capable of.

New cars come with an 80kph/50mph sticker on them and if you get spotted exceeding that by a Traffic Unit you will get a speeding ticket, points and £60 (possibly going to £90 as part of the current fines review) fine for the privilege!
