My X5 doesn''t have running boards but the wife's does....boooo

Is this Hard, very hard, easy...easy peezy....to do or would there be loads and loads of bits wish one had never started?

What's the likley cost from new parts or 2nd hand?

Anyone actually done it themselves?

This post is over on Xoutpost and includes images of what needs doing.  It's few years old now but still relevant.  You do need to be mindful of differences for 20" wheels (which this one has) over 19" as you need arch flares.  Unfortunately the OEM instruction guide link on it doesn't work any more.. >:(

However this guide link does work..... :). It's a pre-facelift sample, but whether there is any difference I don't know.

There were discussions over there a while back about OEM v non-OEM and I think the concensus ended up with staying original as the quality was 'debatable' for those on fleebay etc.

I don't think it will be a major job to do in all honesty. In terms of cost, not sure. May be worth calling a dealer to get the parts list for the retrofit (I'll ask Sytner Sutton Coldfield tomorrow if you want).

Once you have the parts list you can scour eBay and breakers for everything needed.

Not a mission to do but you will need all four arches with the extended plastic to slide into the new side-steps.

You need to take all four arches off to get the old runners out (bolted in) and then you can put the new steps on and lastly slide the arches in and plastic rivet the lot.

Not a hard job - look at pewters wheel arch extension guide. That shows you how to get the arches off an then you can see how to get to the side-steps.

Just need to find some cheap ones going on ebay now!

Thanks guys....looks like rivet pulling and a socket set, clear head and a dry day. There are a few more bits than I thought but I was expecting that the wheel arch bits needed to be replaced. I can see this going into quite a few £100s...

The parts are here but there are various options but I think I went with the normal option as I have 19" on sport

Looks far too cheap........... :)

Remember that a 'kit' will be cheaper - at least I hope it will be!

I think I've just changed my mnd

It would be cheaper to part out a wreck. Makes you appreciate getting the "spec" right when buying

me thinks a breaker would be an option but I'm sure they know the value of the parts

If you want OEM then this is the BMW retrofit kit.  OK it's $900 bucks, but it's at least a bit cheaper.....and it's only for 19" wheels.

eBay currently has all four arches for £160 total but you can get them for a lot less. Then just the steps and they go for less than £100...

Just save a search and you'll get emails daily.

link below for BMW Genuine 20" Wheel Arch Extensions Retrofit Kit E53 X5 51710398336 with running boards
Genuine items~Direct from BMW~2 Year Warranty there is a kit with 335 at end not sure if for cars without running boards you may have to check OEM site

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190659388391? ... 1423.l2649

It would be worth looking at their shop bmw direct store on ebay as may have offer on running boards as well Couldn't see it but poss worth email to them
