Can E70 alloys fit E53 ??

Post by jonnyivy » Mon Jul 16, 2012 10:37 pm

I'm sure this may have been posted before but I can't find any info using the 'search'.
I,m wanting to put some 20 inch alloys on my 2003 X5 and see on the Ebay etc. many good looking ones but some are off E70 models or X6. Do these actually fit my E53 with or without modification ?
My front tyres are wearing a bit thin so I thought this would be a good time to up-grade.
Any advice would be appreciated,

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

E70 rims will fit but you will require spigot rings all round as the centre bore is slightly larger than on the E53. X6 rims will fit also and will only require the spigot rings for the fronts as the rear are same bore size.

I've got a spare pair of spigot rings if required from when I had the X6 rims fitted earlier in the year.

hi Raj is right but be very carefull as I bought E70 alloys for my 2004 E53 the fronts fit great but the rears were catching the rear arch as the Et on them is different , the et is 48 on the fronts but 53 on the rears on some of the E70 wheels they are 45 which you think is only 8mm difference but the tyres catch the only option is to get some spacers 20-25mm which correct the offset & ensure that the wheels dont catch !
The best line to go down are the e71 X6 wheels as I have just fitted a set of 19" X6 wheels to my car the rear Et was 19 on the wheels & et48 on the front so no catching again watch out for too wide tyres as you will need the extentions on the arches if the wheels stick out the police will pull you over & fine you ?
if you need help check out various wheel sites ! best check the tracking once you have chosen the wheels so not to scrub the new tyres off .
I will try to find out the styles you can have tomorrow ?

Fair point too, the offsets do need to be factored in. But spacers will allow fitment if the offset is too high.

Thanks for that info,.... as long as it wasn';t the other way round,...centre bore too small.
I do remember seeing photos of your car Raj with differant alloys (was it earlier this year ?)
When you are saying that the tyres will rub if the et is not right,... do you mean they rub on the inside of the wheel well ? as you say spacers will correct this ? (not on the wheel arch )
So now I can go ahead and look at some E70 wheels now,...... I'll take the X5 with me and try them on at sellers house first to make sure they fit okay.
Thanks again,...... I knew this was the place to get my advice !!!

Hi John,

yes earlier in the year I was running X6 Style 259's CLICKY.

If offset is too high then yes there is a possibility of rubbing on the inner wheel arch liner side and offset to low and will rub on outside wheel arch.

You can generally work out the max you can get away with.

no just clearing out the garage , I am sick of messers though I bought some E70 wheels for my E53 after taking advise from a BMW dealer in carlisle , finding out the hard way that the rears didnt fit , eventually I found a spacer that fit eibach 25mm , once fitted I advised the insurance that I had fitted them who suddenly said they would not insure me with them on . I think you phoned me about them 21" they are still in the garage , next bought some E71 X6 wheels new with no tyres with hindsight I should have just put new tyres on my own but wanted to use runflats as we have a big caravan , cheapest quote for tyres were £1200 , offered 2 sets of x6 19" for just over this by local dealer so I bought them & that is what is on my car plus a spare new set when they wear out . The only trouble is that every body wants the wheels for zero as like you advertising them on here they want new tyres & brandnew wheels for peanuts yet when they want to sell there own they are dealer prices , I think your 259 s were on here for months obviously I just want to recoup some of my money back but maybe I should try to sell them on a honda site instead !
