Too good to be true??

Post by Turks » Fri Aug 17, 2012 1:09 pm

This looks all ok on the face of it... Amazing value or has he missed a '1' from the front of the price?

Probably about right, cat d and mileage considered, priced to sell I would say, and still movement in the price.

6 Owners seems (to me) a bit high though......is this common in the E53 sector now?

I too would say its priced to sell and given its a cat d (should be around 25% cheaper) also would say 6 owners not to be un common now, some e53s are 12 years old now and also if you think how the fuel prices have been fluctuating since 2008 I think a lot of x5s might get bought by people who don't really realise how thirsty they are and sell on quick!

I hadn't looked at it quite that way.....and yes from that angle it does make sense I suppose.  :)

I was perhaps steered by having a Calibra aged just 18 months with 5 Owners......and that was a pile of Sh.....trouble.. >:(

tbh i got the logbook back and my 325i e30 has had 21!! but the milage checks 100% genuine at 111k and the car is absolutly imaculate for 25 years so i would say its always been a summer toy, i dont quite know as last time i quoted it as true someone says it wasnt but plate changes have an impact on number of previous owners as its something to do with the number of logbooks issued on the car, also if someone with a treder policy owns it for a period they dont show up as an owner ::)

Plate/Registration changes do not impact the number of keepers, only a keeper change 'tots up' the number.  You can get a reg plate history from the DVLA (for a fee no doubt), but the V5 doesn't record that as a keeper change - at least that's what a web search about V5's comes back with.

As you say, sounds like yours was a Summer Toy, and no one kept it very long.  I know HRH is determined to hang onto her E46 convertible come hell or high water!!  Can't really blame her as it was built to order, has the 3.0D diesel engine and a manual box, and pulls like a locomotive...... 8)

Now that's different, almost too good to be true, would definately ask a lot of questions to find out why it's on the cheap side, especially from a dealer.
There again, it could be a very genuine car that they bought in at the right money and just want it gone.
The only other bargain I know about at the moment is an Estoril blue 4.6is LPG. ;)

4.8is would be a nice move up from my prefacelift 4.4i Sport & a wholly appropriate car for an administrator who has written such a comprehensive & internationally read E53 buyers guide ;)

Shame I need to spend so many £'s on my relatively newly purchased home.

Having looked at this again I remember seeing the car advertised before. On face of it it looks okay but it hasn't got the original BMW SAT NAV unit.........look at last pic on the traders website of the comms display screen..............Not cheap to source & hassle to fit.  Many buying 4.8is expect to see factory 16:9 sat there along with factory bluetooth & DSP on a 4.8is. The rear screens whilst handy aren't beautiful. If buying a 4,8is with rear enttertinment I'd ideally like OE factory or decent screens like Alpine units..........Essentially  I wouldn't like to look like I had done a ram raid at Tandy's and not been fussy as to what I selected on the way out.

As with any E53 hard to put real value on it due to prices all over the place. Not saying this car wants for anything but as with any used example it would need checking over, (cost to put fresh decent matching rubber all round, sort brakes, any servicing or cosmetics can add up.)

No mention re service history. I would want to be able to verify mileage & history on one of these especially with one previous owner and odometer reading sitting appealingly at 85k right in target of many like to buy at 85k or less to avoid cars approaching 100k.  Assuming mileage correct, rear bushes & front outer CV's to consider too if not already done already.

As for dealer prices versus private this is an indy trader selling & not an AUC car at a BMW main dealer......................In my experience many greedy private sellers want forecourt money for cars that need significant prep. Independent traders, (some selling horrible cars), price to compete or undercut private & other sellers. In truth there is often little in price variation between indy & private. Some indy traders specialising in non BMW makes can be keener to move on price to get rid & maybe have a drink or 2.

Many 3rd party warranties in reality provide little protection for the buyer & sale of goods act in reality offers little real protection for issues that genuinely develop months after the car is sold.

Must emphasise I have not seen the car concerned & many comments above are general......The 4.8is referred to may be absolutely stunning & offered by a great seller, with a great warranty aftersales package.

However, for now my 4.4i Sport remains safely here - despite me considering other vehicles occasionally.

That has done 63,000 miles more...

I would hope that these are two anomalies in the 4.8is market - i'm clinging on to hope that mine is still worth something haha!
