Passed......

Post by Denis O » Thu Mar 07, 2013 10:50 am

In to Halfords Autocentre for MOT yesterday. My first since buying the car a year ago and it passed  :) with just a couple of advisories:

1). Offside rear tyre almost on wear limit, Knew that so looking for a 20" Diamaris to replace.

2). Handbrake at 18% efficiency when pass is 16%. I can't remember the last time I used the handbrake, being an auto it just goes into park. Probably lack of use that's made it give up. Will have a look at the shoes next time the wheels off.

So 1/2 price MOT (£27.42) as I booked it on-line. Arrived at 08.30 and left at 09.30. No pressure to have brakes or anything else done by them so all good.

Well done you...and the X5..

Handbrake is a common one on these cars because not everyone uses it as the auto uses 'P' anyway.

When they mot'd mine he just drove it down the street to test the brakes, handbrakes crap, as pointed out, I never use it. I thought they couldn't test the x on the brake tester as its permanent 4 wheel drive???

A common fix for the poor hand brake is to drive for a short distance with the hand brake partly on to burn off any glaze on the drum/linings. This is normally done just before the MOT and helps with the efficiency :)

Interesting comments about scrubbing the drum/lining. Guess what I shall be doing just before the next test.

The guy did use the Decelerometer to test the brakes and a quick look at the MOT rules suggests,

"During the decelerometer test, each application of the brake should be gradual and the tester should endeavour to achieve only the required percentage to pass, rather than the best possible result"

Not surprising that it only achieved 18% as the tester should not be looking for any more.
