Coolant Temperature Sensor on the Facelifted diesel.. Where???

Post by rb0135 » Sat Mar 09, 2013 4:01 am

Hi All,

Just trying to find the coolant temperature sensor on the 3.0D 2005 model. I have gone through Realoem but under all the engine cooling areas, I cant seem to find it.  :-[  The only sensor I can find is the coolant level sensor on the Expansion tank.. Surely, that isn't it

Anyone?

Thanks,
Rob

:'( 44 views and no takers.

I found it and it is call a DOUBLE TEMPERATURE SWITCH and located on the cylinder head (learn something everyday). Its going to be a bitch to replace, I might even pay someone to do it....

Sorry Rob, we used to have access to a really useful copy of the BMW TIS (Tech Instr Sys) on the web, but BMW insisted it was 'removed' and not many folks will have changed theirs.

Normally I would have aimed you at the TIS..... :cry1:

Hi Richard, no probs. I did a lot of looking around before I posted and I have TIS on my computer, but still couldn't find it (still cant find in TIS the how to get to it to replace).. It helps now, that I know it isn't called a coolant temp sensor but a DTS or Double Temp Switch (although it is a sensor). Found it was called that when I stumbled (after hours of searching) on an E39 site where someone was talking about a very similar issue I have, a lack of power when engine at operating temperature (and it isn't the turbo, its been changed, not the MAF its been changed, not cracked manifold in and exhaust, EGR working and cleaned and the list goes on). I have been told it is most likely this sensor. I don't have any codes to go by either.

The DTS sends one signal to the DME and one to the gauge (apparently).

Finally found the part on Realoem, but as mentioned TIS says nothing about replacing it..  >:(
