Glow Plugs

Post by marlin758 » Tue Mar 19, 2013 10:41 am

BMWScan is showing that I have 2 faulty glow plugs - Apart from the blue fog ( and neighbours coughing ) in exceptionally cold weather starts it doesn't appear to cause any problems.

I have bought 2 to replace them but am wary about starting the job after reading various comments about them snapping in the head and then a head off job to sort it out.  :(

How common is this ? Anyone had it happen or anyone changed them without problems ?

Or has anyone any tips to avoid it happening ?

Hi i have 3 heater plugs showing up faulty on my scanner and like you on cold start up i send a cloud of blue smoke into next doors garden but then the x runs ok, its just the first start up in the cold ,
i also have heard the plugs tend to snap off in the head ,i think the trick is to get the engine fully warmed up before you attemt to remove them,
i have decided to leave mine alone for the moment till i get more advice ,

Think I had 4 faulty on mine but it started fine, but after changing all six (best to do all at the same time or it's a lot of stripping down to do the others later ) it started even better.

Very hesitant to replace mine either in case of snapping them , 5 are showing as faulty on the scanner but car starts just fine albeit with a puff of smoke .

If you do replace them the only tip i can offer is to soak the glow plugs (thread) overnight with a
generous amount of duck oil . I have always used duck oil as its silicone free and does not dry out quickly unlike WD40.

Thanks everyone .

I think I may do the same as most of you and leave well enough alone for now .

Apart from it's anti-social behaviour it starts and runs fine  :o
