Gearbox re-build / replace needed - Surrey

Post by RoShamBo » Tue Jul 01, 2014 3:31 pm

2003 4.4i, 90k miles.

Had the Trans Failsafe Prog error come up on the dash several times over the last few weeks.
Long story short just been diagnosed with a replacement or rebuild for the gearbox. Ouch.

So...anyone know a good gearbox specialist in Surrey who they can recommend ?

3D Transmissions in Reading / Aldershot have been recommended.

Looking at minimum £ 1500 for a re-build (more likely £2-2.5k) or around £5k for a new gearbox.

Cheers

Ro.

I moved from Surrey before owning a BMW but maybe try speaking to Chris Plumber in Aldershot, Mark from Mjf engineering in Beare Green or Rich from Barkers motor works in haslemere, ( have only used the later but spoken with the others who seemed sound)

Don't  take this the wrong way.... all of them are generally helpful if not messed about but I suspect they will want to see your car or a proper diagnostic report from another trusted indy first...I appreciate you haven't come along indicating a fix for £200 and am thus fairly sure you won't expect them to look after you for peanuts.

If you don't get very far there you mag need to hunt further.

As for your recommendation - my rule is to judge quality of speaker before their words..... If the recommendation was from someone who knows the topic then worth considering but beware of mutterings from mates with a car that simply hasn't had gearbox  issues since a recent repair or replacement.

Moar will probably know of at least one in the area.
