Oil leak on 3.0i manual.

Post by Chrisw4266 » Mon Jul 14, 2014 9:45 pm

Hi everyone my X5 has a bad oil leak that I've narrowed down to the oil filter housing to block gasket. I've found some info on fitting it on a E46 330i, but was wondering if anyone had tried this on a X5. Any tips or tricks would be great I'm tackling this on Wednesday day so will take pics and do a write up if anyone else is interested.

Tackled the oil leak yesterday it wasn't a bad job TBF. To remove the oil filter housing is fairly straight forward.
First remove the air box and ducting. Then remove the 2 bolts for the PAS fluid reservoir and move it across out of the way.
Remove alt. belt and tensioner. I just removed the belt from the pulleys if you have the correct tools for removing the fan then you can remove that to give you more room to work in.
Next disconnect alt. wiring and remove the 2 long bolts from the alt. with the bolts removed the alt. will need wiggling to free it from the housing, also the air ducting on the back of the alt. needs removing.
With the alt. out. Next remove the 4 bolts for the PAS pump. There's 2 long bolts on the front and 2 short ones on the rear. Once the bolts are out drop the PAS pump down to the under tray.
Now remove the Vanos oil feed pipe, I disconnected it at the Vanos end as it's difficult to get to it at the filter housing. You'll need 2 new crush washers to replace the old ones on the Vanos banjo bolt.
There are 6 bolts holding the housing to the block before removing the loosen the oil filter to allow the oil to drain back to the sump. I loosened the 6 bolts in a criss-cross pattern there's a couple of wiring plugs attached to the housing once they're off remove the housing and it should look like this.

Once off give it all a clean and refit the housing the torque setting for the 6 13mm bolts is 23Nm.

It is fairly straight forward but not a quick job. Don't forget to top up your oil and run for a bit to check for leaks.
