Hi

thanks for that,  i see an O ring at the base,  are they just yank it up to remove the dipstick tube then and replace O ring if its that is allowing oil up ?

come on chaps,  someone must have had a leaky dipstick

the web is full of USA cars with petrol engines and the lower seal failing ,  im presuming the dipstick just pulls up from the sump and is a push fit with the new lower and upper seal

Haven't done an X5 but have done M3 Somewhere along the dipstick tube will be a mounting bracket secured to the block or some such which will need undone and then just pull the tube out. replace "o" ring, lub the "o" ring well as the new ones can be difficult to push fully home. Be careful when removing as, if the old ring is broken the bits can fall down the hole.

thanks for that
indeed  for anyone else,  unbolt the tube support and simply pull upwards.  the lower seal seems to stay in the recess so you have to fish it out with a probe of some kind, careful not to drop anything into the sump.

There is one 0 ring at bottom and 2 on the upper end of the tube, dont know if a special size but not taking chances at £4 each.
Get them here if anyone needs. maybe cheaper at dealer but my nearest is an hour away.

lower o ring  ,, they seem to sell a lot of this one..

Upper, of which there are 2 .  not many of this one sold.
