M Sport E90 steering wheel fitted to my E70

Post by Digidick » Sun Dec 30, 2018 5:20 pm

The 3 Series and 1 Series M Sport steering wheel is a straight swap and with it being slightly smaller feels great in the hands.

Good upgrade, I always hated the spindly wheel fitted to my e46 330d but the cost of an m sport wheel was high :D

No flappies so I couldn't do this but it does look like a nice wheel - the E70 M wheel is really thick, possibly too much so but I'm used to it now until I drive the wifes X1 for a bit and get back in mine again......

These do come with paddles but seem too expensive really.

They might be very slightly thinner but feel better in the hands especially around the 10 & 2 o'clock position. I might consider having it re-trimmed a bit thicker in the future.

No coding required, simply a plug and play job?

You mean for the paddles?

That I can't confirm but can't see why not if you already have paddles fitted. All the plugs inside this standard one are exactly the same as the E70 one I removed.

No just in general (minus paddles) - was curious if it simply plugged in and worked. :)

Yep it plugs and works, takes 10 mins to swap.

I would like to bring this thread back to life.

I have a 12' 35i that has the sport steering wheel. I got an e90 sport wheel and swapped it out. I noticed the cables on the e70's airbag were different and not interchangeable with the e90's airbag. Without having the e90 cables at the time I swapped, the airbag was not connected/powered. I got the Restraint System Malfunction notification from this point on. I have yet to install the old airbag back, however it with the e90 airbag and cables installed, the error hasn't went away. What would be my next step?

Have you plugged a scanner in and cleared the fault code ?.

The error needs to be cleared as suggested above as it’s a ‘permanent’ error rather than just one that resets itself. Don’t change anything without disconnecting the battery.

Not yet. I only have and OBD II scanner. Would something like iCarly work for this?

Copy that. So while the code is valid and visible. The functionality is still normal right?

It might or might not. The system may not activate that air bag if it sees a fault, or it may turn the whole system off. It is also an automatic MOT fail (major fault). The functional description doesn’t say anything about what the fault condition indicator prevents from operating if the system warning light is on.

It just says do not work on any components with the battery connected. The process says to check the fault code, then disconnect the battery and wait 1 minute to ensure capacitors are discharged (the system is capable of firing within that timeframe) before doing anything, sort the problem highlighted by the fault code, reconnect the battery and clear the code.
