Seat bolster refurb..

Sometimes cars are a pita. Had the door handle issue on mine, drivers side though :x . Climbing over from the passenger side was not an easy task and would be worse now at my age.

I was going to use the spare Honda too as it was frosty but I thought no I’ll take the X5. Driver door opened ok ish but before the wife had a go at yanking the passenger door off I thought I’d try it. Gently. Nope, it just went pop.
I haven’t replaced that side in the 10 years I’ve had the car but it’s had a battering from sad wife and kids over that time.
What I may do as I have a free weekend, is repair the carrier and do the anti frost job on both latches so it shouldn’t happen again. Then if I’m feeling all jolly I’ll take a look at the seat. Maybe.

Too chilly here for outdoors activity. Hope you have a workshop, and good luck

I always find that you can go for ages without having any problems and then have a two or three in quick succession and in this weather you tend to let them build up.

Seat bolster refurb..

I could hear it clicking when I was driving last night but hoped it was a stone. It's one hell of a bolt - 10mm easy.
Sort of fortunately I was going to to get a new set of tyres anyway in the next few months but this has accelerated the decision.
And I've noticed that the coolant temp guage is running slightly below vertical. Had the diagnostic on it this morning and the engine temp never got over 80° so I think the thermostat is failing open. Ffs.. 🙄

Oh dear. The joys of car ownership, but if things come in three's? You're done.

Parked it anywhere unusual recently? That looks to be dead square in the tyre like its was possibly placed before driving off?...

As a precaution because I have LPG tank in spare wheel well I got one of those plug kits. Picked up a nail and tyre pressure monitor picked up the drop in pressure. I pulled the nail and used the plug kit. (Motorway services) Done about 100 miles home and never lost any air. I was impressed.

I have one of those kits, though have never used it. Good to read they're effective.

Themoog2, I sure hope that’s the last thing that crops up.

I have the plug kit but I won’t bother with it now as A: I’ve booked for a full set of tyres on Monday and B: I think the hole from the bolt will be too big to seal up and if I try and it doesn’t work I’m stuck with a flat tyre. At the moment it’s still holding pressure.
The heated seat burning my ass seems like ages ago now..

The burning of my right thigh i remember well. I lived with the loss of the heated seat, my E53 ownership was nearing its end anyway. Always disappointing and frustrating though when a nice feature fails.

Have got all 4 wheels fitted with sealant to self seal if I get a nail /screw in the tyre, cannot say if effective as have not picked up any punctures.
I also carry a plug kit and compressor as a back up.
As an aside, car went in for MOT yesterday, failed on rear fog light flashing on and off (was a loose connection at bulb holder) nipped home and replaced both bulbs, and refitted with vaseline to stop corrosion, back to garage and got my MOT ticket for another year . Only did 800 miles in last year.
Only use it for High days and holidays

So I took the door to bits today. It took me a while to get it open using the wire method.. anyway, nothing was broken just stuck. I replaced the handle carrier anyway and spray greased everything then put it all back together. All with a hangover.
New set of tyres being fitted on Monday. I’m having Accelera Iotas as I’ve had them before on other cars and I like them. And they run quiet. £480 fitted which is ok I thought. That decision will probably make people go “ah you should have had these tyres blah blah” but I figured it’s not a super car and I can do what I want.
I was going to have the wheels refurbished but time was not on my side so that will have to wait. Next on the list is a pair of front cv axles, two front brake flexi hoses and an engine service which I’ll have done when the mot is due in April.

I did that once, in my winter set. It bothered me that it took 3-4 miles for the sealant that had pooled overnight in the bottom of the tyres to dissipate around the inside of the tyres again. It was like driving on badly flat-spotted tyres. :o
Not sure I want to do that again, so these days I carry a plug kit and 12v inflator.
