No liquids lost, just fiddly.
Any blockage with carbon deposits will have some adverse affects on performance/efficiency.

I see 4 nuts possibly 2 of which hidden a bit?
a large hose -jubilee clip?
A solid pipe with a bend - not sure how attached
A small vacuum pipe?
that it?
Carb cleaner----Halfords?
Have already replaced the air filter and the oil separator ,,,which was foam....54 plate facelift

In that case, this is a no-brainier for you. You'll cope with this without any issues.
Just watch the 2 nuts underneath, you can lose them easily into the depths of the engine bay!
Otherwise you've got it covered (do a quick search for x555's How To on the subject).

additional
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=11&fg=40
This diagram is interesting....am I right in sayint the pipework takes turbocharged air...passes it through the intercooler then via the EGR into the engine?
If so and the EGR is manky then that crud could have come through turbo or cooler...or am I wrong>?
Has anyone ever made the intercooler bigger (a faff I know) to get more power?

I'll be fine....after all I've just fitted new (EBAY) horns to the wifes X5 after one decided not to work....now that was an exercise in one handed car gynecology
seems there is a U shaped clamp that holds the side pipe on to the egr
