The reason the police are hot on plates is twofold is their equipment can't read it to check legitamacy of your car to be on the road, uninsured drivers, or no tax, etc.

The second reason, which hit home to me, was that if your child or family member had been knocked down, or worse, by a car with an illegal number plate and as a result you cant read what it should be, then you passed what you thought it was to the police, they would struggle to trace the driver,  then how would you feel in that instance about an illegal number plate ?

So when I got a personalised plate I got what I wanted and left it correctly spaced,  and no hassles with police.

Spacing is different from fonts, that is where the issue you mentioned could happen (i.e. not being able to read it).

However, the moved letter ones are usually easier to remember as they form a word.

All plates that conform to the required standards can be read by machines and police, so no problem there. Only when you make italics or so does it become an issue.
